Along with this new found freedom comes the sunshine and the chance for a sunny road trip, maybe even a self catering holding. You’ve written your list: hand sanitiser (tick), face masks (tick), suntan lotion (tick), but what about keeping your vehicle healthy? Chances are your car has had very little use of late. Before heading off there are several things that should be checked other than your fuel tank, either by yourself, or your garage. Tyres often get overlooked, pressure and condition are extremely important when it comes to road safety (don’t forget to check your spare too if you have one!) Levels should be checked and topped up as required. Never try to top up your coolant if the engine is hot, all you will achieve is a torant of water and a burn. In contrast, oil levels should be checked when the engine is warm, this ensures that the oil is not sitting in the bottom of the engine, giving you a false reading. A quick check of lightbulbs and indicators is always a good idea too. Never ignore warning signals on your dash. In general terms orange warnings are advisories but red warning lights should be acted upon straight away. If in doubt always pull over and give your garage a quick call – this could save you the price of a new engine!
These few simple checks can be done in minutes and will save you hours of sitting on the roadside waiting for a recovery lorry. Whatever you’re doing, where every you’re going, have fun and travel safe 😉
